Lab to Market Leadership | The Essential Deep Tech Podcast

What Does it Take to Lead a Deep Tech Startup from Lab to Market?

In this weekly series, our founder & CEO, Chris Reichhelm, talks with entrepreneurs, executives, investors, corporates and policymakers about the true nature of the Lab to Market journey – and the skills, experience and talent required to make it.

Every week, we take an in-depth look at the journeys of Deep Tech startups as they seek out commercialisation and product-market-fit. We meet with successful Deep Tech entrepreneurs and executives from around the world, seeking to understand the actions, decisions, and lessons responsible for moving them from Research through to Prototype, Pilot, F.O.A.K. and eventually, Market Deployment.

We also capture the perspective of corporates and investors, to understand what they’re looking for when seeking to partner with, buy or invest in a Deep Tech company. And of course, we reflect on our many years of serving Deep Tech startups and investors around the world providing insight on skills acquisition and team building.

If you are part of a Deep Tech company that is on the Lab-to-Market journey, or if you are interested in learning more about life in a Deep Tech company, please – join our community and subscribe to our podcast.

Deep Tech Venture Building: Out The Back Ventures’ Blueprint for University Spinout Success

“I don’t understand why it was technology first - ‘this is the technology, let’s go find someone now.’ The people and the technology are equally important. Our view is that we would like to develop the talent in parallel with our discovery of the technology, because in the end, good people are busy and they’ve got lots of options. How do you get them to care about something?” - Keong Chan reveals how Out the Back Ventures is revolutionising early-stage deep tech investing by building global university and national laboratory relationships from Perth, Australia.

Why Deep Tech Unicorns Fail: Lessons from Lilium and Arrival’s Billion-Dollar Mistakes

When you grow your team, your startup moves to the suburbs and has kids. You’re no longer agile, you have certain risks you didn’t have before. People put pressures on organisations to grow for the sake of it, believing that growing the team adds value on its own. But it’s not quite as simple as that. James Arnold draws on his experience at billion-dollar unicorns Lilium and Arrival to reveal why rapid scaling destroys Deep Tech startups and what we can learn from spectacular failures

Deep Tech Spinouts: Inside Albion Ventures' Decade-Long Partnership with UCL| Dave Grimm

There's a false security in the fact that there's a patent there that makes people think we can take our time. Apple patented the click wheel in 2004 and launched the iPhone in 2007 - those patents became basically worthless. You need to build a culture of pace and execution from the off. - Dave Grimm reveals how Albion Ventures transformed university spinouts through a decade-long partnership with UCL, creating new models for equity, pace, and founder transitions that actually work for Deep Tech companies

Quantum Computing Scale-Up: How Universal Quantum is Building Million-Qubit Systems| Dr Sebastian Weidt

‘We asked this really audacious question: would it technically be possible today, with lots of money and lots of great people, to build a million-qubit trapped-ion quantum computer? It turned out once we went through that hard work that it would technically be possible - really difficult, really hard, no doubt - but we saw a way of doing that.’ - Dr Sebastian Weidt reveals how Universal Quantum transformed from academic research into a mission to build quantum computers at unprecedented scale. Discover the lab-to-market lessons from one of Deep Tech's most ambitious journeys.

Challenging Deep Tech Norms: Adopting Lean Principles from Lab to Market | Mark Bjornsgaard

‘The trouble is when we start to build a business, we think we're building a business, but we're not, we're testing an assumption. If you start a business thinking that you are building a business that's inherently wrong. You are only ever a tester of assumptions.’ - Mark Bjornsgaard, founder and CEO of System Two Group, challenges Deep Tech Leaders to rethink their approach to commercialisation. With eight successful exits including Deep Green Technologies (sold to Octopus Energy for £200 million), Mark argues that lean principles can revolutionise how Deep Tech companies validate their path from lab to market.

Nuclear Fusion Breakthrough: The Tokamak Energy Story

‘We were very fortunate with early investors who liked the scientific argument for the spherical tokamak being very efficient and they loved the properties of the high temperature superconductor. Our investors could easily see the potential, even if the business model might need to change over time to get the whole job done.’ - Dr. David Kingham reveals how Tokamak Energy transformed from three scientists with £200,000 into a global fusion leader achieving 100 million degree plasma temperatures. Discover the lab-to-market lessons from one of Deep Tech's most ambitious journeys.
